Primary responsibilities include purchasing supply chain services, including transportation from motor carriers and warehouse services from 3PL vendors. Also responsible for managing performance, and ensuring vendors maintain Penskeâ€™s minimum compliance standards. Responsible to document and understand customersâ€™ transportation and warehouse requirements, develop RFQâ€™s, identify and engage 3PLs, and negotiate the best rates and service possible for Penskeâ€™s customers. Provide continuous improvement opportunities for both cost and service initiatives through data analysis and customer engagement. Study and understand transport market rate and capacity trends to ensure carrier coverage and mitigate cost impacts to the customer.
Establish and develop pricing and sourcing strategies for existing customers to drive continuous improvement efforts
Utilize market trends, benchmarking, and historical rates in the formulation of customer sourcing strategies
Lead new customer implementations and ensure smooth transition to the vendor management team for ongoing support post start-up
Responsible for facilitating network wide RFP projects for existing customers, as well as executing stand-alone professional sourcing projects for new customers
Provide mentorship for other sourcing team members
Establish and grow relationships with truckload, bulk, LTL, intermodal, rail and other transport carriers in North America to support customer requirements
Establish and grow relationships with warehouse service providers in North America to support customer requirements
Manage RFQs to establish the best rates possible and secure capacity
Conduct regular meetings with core vendors to review cost and service performance
Establish customer specific performance standards and distribute monthly scorecards to the vendors and summary scorecards to our customers
Initiate contracting with new providers
Provide carrier training and on-boarding to ensure compliance with Penske and customer requirements.
Provide warehouse on-boarding to ensure compliance with Penske and customer requirements
Ensure all tariffs built in our transportation management system are accurate and reflect negotiated rates
Use data and analytics to identify customer-specific cost and service opportunities
Proactively develop and present savings proposals to senior leaders
Work closely with Penske sales executives to respond quickly to perspective customer Requests for Quote
Work closely with the Operations and Load Planning teams to trouble shoot issues and provide adequate capacity
5-7 years of transportation purchasing experience including negotiating rates and service levels with both carriers across multiple modes, including TL, Bulk, Rail, LTL, Intermodal and warehouse providers-
Bachelorâ€™s Degree in Logistics or related field preferred
Working Knowledge of carrier operations, rate structures, contracts, and tariffs required
Working knowledge of warehouse operations, rate structures and contract required
Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to negotiate effectively with senior executives
Ability to complete multiple, complex, tasks and assignments
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Strong oral and written communications skills are required
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
