The Director of Transportation has the responsibility of planning, organizing, budgeting, directing and controlling all transportation activities including private truck fleet management to meet or exceed company goals in member development, safety, quality, environmental and transportation cost management.
Coach the operation and its members to deliver superlative results in the areas of safety, process improvement, productivity, member development, transportation financials/generating profits with private truck fleet and providing HICS to our customers.
Provide the professional business environment and unified direction required to continually improve the operation to become the “Best Company in the World".
Work closely with the business units and functional areas to grow the businesses and provide predictability in service and transportation costs for Johnsonville and our customers.
Establish a successful strategy for the transportation team that supports the company’s “Must Do Can’t Fail” initiatives and is aligned with the company’s Logistics/Supply Chain strategies.
Ensure sufficient transportation capacity for all customer deliveries in the U.S. and Canada, resupply movements of batter/finished goods/by-products, inbound materials and export to Mexico, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Make certain the transportation team is contributing its share to the company’s annual cost savings and continuous improvement/productivity goals.
Develop processes to improve and sustain on-time delivery that meets or exceeds our customer’s expectations.
Develop strong relationships and long-term partnerships with truck carriers, intermodal service providers, railroads, freight brokers and 3PL warehouses as it pertains to transportation requirements to improve and sustain service and create efficiencies.
Maintain safety and regulatory compliance for the Johnsonville private truck fleet and its drivers and develop a plan for profitable growth of our fleet.
Foster a culture of teamwork, personal learning and professional development for all members.
Empower members to get involved with implementing programs, ideas or guidelines which insure fairness and improve member moral and work life balance
Lead the integration of the Root Cause Analysis and other continuous improvement methodologies (lean six sigma tools) within the transportation team and ensure member development on all the supply chain foundational skills.
Utilize analytics and external benchmarking to drive predictability in service and transportation costs
Network in the industry with peers from other CPG companies on best practices in transportation management.
Bachelor’s Degree required; preferably in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain or Business/related field
10 years of successful experience in various leadership roles in transportation/logistics preferred.
Demonstrated leadership abilities and change management skills; experience leading and developing others to reach their full potential and holding others accountable for results/behaviors
Experience managing private truck fleets, generating profits/positive returns with private truck fleet and compliance with federal motor carrier safety regulations
Experience in managing the various modes of transportation and understanding of the cost differences; LTL, TL/multi-stop TL, dry, temperature controlled, intermodal/TOFC, rail, ocean container, and rail/boxcar
Knowledge and experience with continuous improvement disciplines and project management
Budgeting experience, including capital planning, capacity planning and productivity pipeline projects
